For the second time in a week, Daviess County Little League Softball found itself in a similar position – holding onto a lead against Indiana. However, this time the result was different – shutting out their rival 1-0 to win the Central Region Championship and advance to the Little League World Series for the first time.
Michaela Knight was the difference maker, striking out five and only allowing six total baserunners over six shutout innings.
“Curly is an elite pitcher for us, but our defense is also superior,” Coach JW O’Bryan said. “Our team has figured out how to string together hits that find the holes. We are a complete team with solid defense, but without out bats, we cannot accomplish our destiny.”
Neither team could find their footing early, with the two teams exchanging zeros through the first four innings. It took Paisley Edge just one swing to lead off the fifth to change the outcome of the game, tripling to center field.
One pitch later, she was able to scurry home thanks to a Hunter Sparks groundout. Finley Beaven singled to continue the momentum, but a ground out and strikeout ended the rally.
Indiana’s best opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a pair of one-out singles. Unfazed, it took Knight just three pitches to escape the jam, inducing a pair of groundouts.
This win ended a year of heartbreak, avenging Daviess County’s loss in the 2025 Region Championship. Daviess County has over a week to prepare, with the College World Series set to kick off on August 2nd.
“We are going for the world, but without energy and effort, we will fall short,” O’Bryan said. “We need Kentucky’s support in this, and thank you to everyone who has reached out.”
