Thick layers of mud and debris were being broken up and washed away from the stairwell fountain in Smothers Park Monday. Sanitation workers took the advantage of the low level of the Ohio River to clean out the bank so the fountain can operate as usual this summer.
With more of the bank exposed, onlookers were able to see not only large wooded debris but layers of hardened mud at the lowest level of the stairwell.
By the end of the day Monday, the team had gotten a significant portion of the buildup cleaned.
