Following a very strong 2021 season, Daviess County boys golf is looking to come back with a bang and build upon their success for another deep postseason run.

The Panthers will be led by three key returning golfers, including Grant Broughton, Dawson Lamb and Grayson Powers.

“They have all traveled for a couple seasons now and their experience and ability should allow them to be some of the best players in the region,” said Head Coach Lars King.

Broughton was one of the best golfers in the state last season, helping Daviess County place second in regionals by placing second individually himself with a 79. He also shot a 148 in the state tournament, where afterwards King admitted that Broughton is going to be the face of their program for years to come.

“I think Grant is what sets us apart from most teams in the region,” King said. “He has the ability and has shown that he can shoot under par rounds. We are the only team that has a player of his caliber.”

With the season already underway, the Panthers have gotten two players in Hayden Sapp and Logan Mewes to move into their top-five over the course of six events.

“Hayden is a senior and is coming into form with his best round of his competitive career this past weekend,” King said. “Logan is a new player for the team, is very athletic and has a lot of potential.”

King expects the team to be extremely competitive this season, stating that they have a strong top-three that includes some of the best players around.

“I expect our team to be competitive, we have a really strong core, our top 3 are some of the best in the region,” King said. “If we can find a fourth score we will be in the running for the region this year.”

King said in order for them to take a big leap this season, they will have to have a fourth player that can consistently shoot in the 80’s. This will allow the Panthers to post a team score that can compete day in and day out.

“I think our other key for success is for those top-three players to play to their potential,” Broughton said. “Grant, Dawson, and Grayson all have the ability to shoot in the 70’s, so we need them to step up and do that on a regular basis.”

All in all, Daviess County’s goal is to return to the state tournament and shoot well in order to further themselves in the postseason. With Broughton leading the charge and a solid group that is coming together nicely early in the season, King has faith that his players will step up to the challenge this season.

“We were only able to get two players to the state tournament last year,” King said. “I would like to see our team be able to advance. I think with the new format we have that ability we just have to perform. Last year we played very poorly in the regional tournament. This year I hope that we can step up and play well when it matters most.”
