Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic boys soccer grabbed wins to close out the weekend, while Apollo split its doubleheader against the Lakers and Tigers.
Apollo vs. Calloway County & Murray
The Eagles had a tale of two stories occur on Saturday, defeating Calloway County 2-0, before falling to Murray 2-0z
Apollo and the Lakers squared off first, as they struggled to get anything going in the first half. The two went into halftime still looking for the first goal of the day.
It was senior Dah Hai that got the first goal of the game, scoring off of an assist from senior Cesar Velazquez, making it a 1-0 game minutes into the second half.
Hai came through again with 24 minutes left to play, serving the ball to senior Hsa Than for the second goal and a 2-0 lead. With more than enough support offensively, senior Steven Teran grabbed five saves in net to secure the 2-0 shutout victory.
The Eagles didn’t have the same luck in game two on Saturday, falling to the Murray Tigers 2-0.
Teran did his best to keep Murray out of net with 18 saves, but the plethora of opportunities gave them enough chances to grab a 2-0 win.
Apollo sits at 2-2 overall following the split doubleheader, as they will take a few days off before taking on Henderson County at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Owensboro vs. Glasgow
Coming off of a tough district loss to Daviess County the Red Devils bounced back with an offensive showcase against Glasgow, shutting them out on the road 6-0.
Freshman Junior Rugama was the one to get things going, grabbing the first goal of the game off an assist from sophomore Ryan Sovar to give Owensboro a 1-0 lead.
Junior struck again before halftime, this time scoring on the assist from junior Peter Saang to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Saang made sure the Red Devils didn’t skip a beat offensively to start the second half, drawing a foul and sinking the penalty kick to make it 3-0. Owensboro continued to pile it on for the remainder of the game, getting three more goals to grab a 6-0 win.
Junior Sang Thang chipped in a goal and an assist, while junior Samuel Thawng grabbed a pair of goals and Rugama and Thang both recorded assists.
With the win Owensboro improves to 2-2-1, as they will now take a few days off before returning home to host University Heights at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Owensboro Catholic vs. Christian County
Coming off of a district win over Apollo in PK’s, the Aces were determined to not let this one to get to a shootout and defeated Christian County 2-1.
Junior Brody Martin got the action started on Saturday, scoring the first goal of the day on an assist from Bryson Payne to take a 1-0 lead. The Colonels on the other hand couldn’t find the back of the net, as Owensboro Catholic took the lead into halftime.
Christian County was able to get the equalizer midway through the second half, but the Aces weren’t going to need extra soccer to decide this one. It was Brody again who scored with 10 minutes left to play, scoring off the assist from senior Austin Martin to secure the 2-0 win.
The Aces controlled possession throughout the game, getting 23 shots with nine of them on goal. Meanwhile, junior Parker Jones had one save for Owensboro Catholic, facing just seven shots on the day with two on goal.
The Aces now sit at 3-1-1 and will look to carry the momentum from this win into their home matchup with Webster County at 7 p.m. on Monday.
