A night after dropping a 9-8 heartbreaker to Madisonville in the Kentucky ALB State Tournament, the Owensboro Bombers bounced back with impressive back-to-back wins over the American Legion KY Post 8 Saints and Lyon County to advance to the Championship.
Holding onto a 7-4 lead in the top of the sixth against the Saints, the Bombers unloaded with 14 runs to ice the game en route to a 21-4 win. Eli Hampton started off the onslaught with a two-run homer, and two batters later, Eli Hatfield connected with an RBI double. RBI singles by Brody Brubaker and Hampton, a Markell Yates RBI triple, and a Colton Carver RBI double pushed the lead to 17-4. Carver scored on a defensive error before Ryleigh Logan capped off the inning with a three-run homer.
Logan, Carver, and Hampton all homered and combined for six hits and 10 RBIs, Yates drove in three runs, and Jagger Pate finished 3-4 with two RBIs. Porter Hay started on the mound, throwing one shutout innings, while Gentry Atwell and Hatfield combined for six strikeouts over six innings.
In their 13-1 win over Lyon County, the Bombers scored all 13 of their runs in the bottom of the first. Hampton and Logan both homered and combined for four hits and seven RBIs, Hatfield and Yates both drove in two runs, and Brubaker went 2-2 with an RBI. Hatfield started on the mound, striking out two over one shutout inning, while Carver pitched two innings in relief.
The Bombers take on Madisonville later this morning at 10:30 a.m. and will need to win two straight to win the title.
