Volleyball recap (Aug. 20): OHS, DCHS, AHS

Owensboro, Apollo and Daviess County volleyball got some local action this weekend, competing with a number of teams across the Commonwealth in the Apollo Summer Slam.

Owensboro vs. Apollo (see Apollo section) University Heights, Madisonville, Madison Central, Green County

The Lady Devils had a rough go at the Apollo Summer Slam on Saturday, going 2-4 in six games to close out the local tournament.

After falling in its opening match to the E-gals, Owensboro seemed like they were about to turn things around against University Heights with a 25-14 win in the first set. UHA bounced back to force a final set with a 25-22 win, closing out the match with a 15-13 win.

The Lady Devils were able to pick up some steam in the third match of the day, taking on Green County. In two back-and-forth sets, Owensboro was able to earn a 2-0 sweep by beating them 25-22, 25-21.

The Lady Devils were only able to secure one more match win on the day, sweeping Muhlenberg County (25-17, 25-16) while falling to Madison Central (25-17, 25-14) and Madisonville (25-20, 25-13).

Owensboro moves to 4-4 overall on the season following Saturday, as they will take a few days off before traveling to take on Ohio County at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Daviess County vs. Bullitt East, South Oldham, Logan County

After winning three straight on Friday to start the Apollo Summer Slam, the Lady Panthers were unable to replicate that success and fell in three straight matches to Bullitt East, South Oldham and Logan County.

Daviess County got off to a solid start in its first match of the day, winning the first set over Bullitt East 25-17. However, the Lady Chargers bounced back with a 25-19 win to force a third set, going on to beat the Lady Panthers 15-13.

Daviess County faced off with Logan County in the second match of the day, falling in the first set 25-15. The Lady Panthers nearly forced a third set, but they fell just short 27-25. 

Daviess County didn’t have much more luck in its third match of the day, falling to South Oldham 25-21, 25-21. The Lady Panthers fall to 4-4 overall on the season after the Apollo Summer Slam wrapped up, as they will take a few days off before hosting Muhlenberg County at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Apollo vs. Thomas Nelson, Trigg County, Breckinridge County, Owensboro

The E-gals volleyball team split their four matches on Saturday, defeating Trigg County and Owensboro while falling to Thomas Nelson and Breckinridge County.

Apollo was unable to stifle Thomas Nelson and Breckinridge County on Saturday, getting swept in the matches at 25-22, 25-7, and 25-22, 25-18 respectively. The E-gals dominated in their match with Trigg County, sweeping them 25-10, 25-11.

Apollo’s last match of the Apollo Summer Slam was a crosstown battle, as they went toe-to-toe with Owensboro. The E-gals were able to come away victorious, sweeping the Lady Devils 25-21, 25-23.

Apollo falls to 3-4 overall on the season following the weekend tournament, as they will take a few days off before a district matchup with Owensboro Catholic at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
