Local boys golf teams battled in a close 9-hole competition at Ben Hawes Golf Course on Monday, Aug. 22, as the Red Devils defeated Owensboro Catholic by one stroke.
Owensboro had a very strong day on the links, with two top three scorers on the day. The Aces JT Payne shot a 38, tying him with Will Rickard before winning a scorecard playoff.
Rickard finished second overall as a result, while Will Hume followed him up with a score of 39. Add a 44 from Walker Gaddis and a 49 from Brady Benjamin and the Red Devils shot a 170 as a team, giving them first place on the day.
Hayden Crabtree followed Payne with a 42 to place second individually for Owensboro Catholic, while Noah Johnson shot a 43 and John Wathen shot a 48 to earn an overall score of 171. Hancock County followed the Aces up in third place with an overall score of 186, while Apollo placed fourth (197) and Daviess County placed fifth (201).
Trevor Cecil led the Eagles by shooting 41, while Ethan Clements grabbed second on the team with 45, Mason Julian shot a 54 and Alex Bowlds shot a 57 to round out their top-four.
Bransen Berry led the Panthers with a 45 with Will Lamb following behind him with a 46, while Hunter Webb shot a 52 and Walker Ferguson shot a 58.
Owensboro, Apollo, Owensboro Catholic and Daviess County will return to Ben Hawes next week, as they will have another 9-hole competition on Monday, Aug. 29.
