Update, Sept. 8 — Law enforcement agencies have determined the threat to Apollo High School was not credible or legitimate and that the messages originated from Arizona, officials have announced. A similar threat was made to an Indiana high school on Wednesday, and the juvenile suspect behind both threats has been arrested. AHS released a statement Thursday about the situation. Update, 9:20 p.m. — There will be an increased law enforcement and district administrative presence at Apollo on Thursday, according to a message sent to families. Law enforcement agencies are still investigating the incident. According to the message, DCPS reiterated that such threats are not tolerated and the district “will pursue immediate legal charges to the fullest extent of the law.”
Original story — Apollo High School administrators and district police were made aware of “a circulated social media post that referenced a person making a possible threat to campus,” officials announced Wednesday evening. Daviess County Public Schools Police, local law enforcement, the U.S. Marshals Service and Department of Homeland Security have been contacted and immediately began an investigation.
According to DCPS, “Additional information will be shared with families as soon as available. You can expect to receive additional communication from Apollo High School by 8:30 p.m. this evening. Student safety is paramount and we will continue to keep you informed.”
A screenshot of the “possible threat” was shared to Facebook Wednesday afternoon by a parent who said her daughter received a message that was shared on Snapchat.
It is unclear who the original sender and recipient of the messages were. The original messages were sent via text. Screenshots of that text exchange then were shared multiple times via Snapchat.
The screenshot shows the following text message exchange:
Person 1: Hi
Person 2: Hi?
P1: Do you go to Apollo?
P2: Yeah why?
P1: Listen.
P2: Huh
P1: I’m going to be shooting up ahs tomorrow
P1: Don’t tell anyone but don’t come to school tomorrow
