Apollo just couldn’t muster up enough offense on Friday night, as turnovers and a strong second half from the Mustangs led to a 34-14 district loss on the road.

McCracken County was able to get on the board first, getting a three-yard rushing touchdown to take a 7-0 lead with 5:38 left in the first quarter. The Eagles were able to respond swiftly, getting a 30-yard rushing touchdown from senior running back Donte Dixon to knot things up at 7-7 with 3:52 left in the first.

The Mustangs were able to find the endzone once again before the first came to a close though, as senior quarterback Christian Combs fumbled in the endzone and was unable to recover. McCracken County pounced on the opportunity, taking a 14-7 lead into the second quarter.

Neither team was able to get much going in the second quarter, even the Mustangs—despite Combs having thrown three interceptions along with his fumble—taking the game into halftime with Apollo trailing 14-7.

In the second half it was all McCracken County however, as they were able to grab two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown while Apollo’s lone touchdown of the half came in the third quarter on a five-yard run by sophomore Niles Board. With the Eagles struggling to stifle the Mustangs offense, they ultimately fell 34-14.

Apollo now sits at 1-5 overall and 0-1 in district play, as they will regroup and take a week off before returning to district play on Oct. 7 against Henderson County.
