Daviess County’s Grant Broughton has played well going to day two of state for the second straight year, hoping to shore some things up and finish in the top-ten once again.
Broughton shot a 74 (+2) on day one to finish tied for 11th, nearly matching his 71 that he shot on day one in 2021. The Panther was happy with his performance on the day, feeling like he was able to set himself up well on the course throughout the round.
“I am pretty pleased with how I played today,” Broughton said. “My strengths today were definitely my irons. I was able to keep it in a good position on the green all day and I was able to hit the shots that were needed almost every time.”
While noting the positives, Broughton has a few things he wants to fine tune on day two. Along with improving his short game, he intends to approach the course in Bowling Green carefully in his final round.
“Today my putting wasn’t bad, but I would love to see just a few more putts drop tomorrow,” Broughton said. “Tomorrow I’m going to continue to be patient and not play too aggressively. On a kind of golf course like this, if you get too aggressive it can really hurt you.”
Broughton is thrilled to be competing for a state title for the second year in a row, happy to see his hard work pay off. He’ll hope to continue his strong play in the second round on Wednesday, hoping to bring home some hardware to Daviess County boy’s golf.
“It means a lot to me to be in contention two years in a row,” Broughton said. “All season the goal has been to play as well in State as possible and I’ve been working very hard to be able to put myself in this position again.”
