The Red Devils come off of their bye week with a big matchup, as they will host a Graves County team that is riding a three-game winning streak as well on senior night at Rash Stadium.
Owensboro currently sits at 5-2 overall with a three-game winning streak, two weeks removed from a monstrous 71-0 road win over Muhlenberg County. Senior quarterback Kasey Boone was nearly perfect in that matchup, throwing for 94 yards and two touchdowns on 5-6 passing while seniors Kenyatta Carbon (91 yards on four carries) and sophomore Deion Winstead (64 yards on three carries) led the way out of the backfield with a pair of touchdowns each.
Winstead also grabbed a pick six in the game, with junior Javion Robinson getting an interception and sophomore Dereon Crowe recovering a fumble as well. While the Red Devils will be well rested coming into the game, so will the Eagles who are coming off of their bye week as well.
“We are coming off of our bye week and headed into our biggest district game to date, so we expect to execute at a high level,” Head Coach Jay Fallin said. “We’ve had an extra week of prep, but so has Graves who was also open last week, so that cuts both ways.”
The Eagles sit at 4-3 overall, but have scored over 30-plus in its last three games—including the 62-14 win over Ohio County in their last game on Sept. 30. Graves County is led by Kaden Gregory under center, as the sophomore quarterback averages 150 passing yards and a touchdown per game while sophomore Denis Marrs leads the way out of the backfield with 78 rushing yards per game.
Undefeated in district play at 3-0, Owensboro and Fallin know that in order to keep it that way they will have to come mentally and physically prepared for a battle.
“They are tough, well-coached and play extremely hard,” Fallin said. “They have a hard-nosed defense first identity… They are a solid team across the board.”
Fallin wants to see improvement in every facet of the game this week by the Red Devils. In order to do so Owensboro will need to be on the same page at all times, with communication being a focal point in order to move to 4-0 in district play.
“Continuing to improve in all three phases of the game [is what we’re striving for],” Fallin said. “Communicating and executing for 48 minutes [will be key to get] another district win and another week of improvement as we head down the stretch.”
