Needing to grab some momentum going into the postseason, Apollo hits the road looking to battle for a win against a strong Greenwood team.
The Eagles suffered a rough loss on the road last week in a crosstown battle with Daviess County, getting shut out 28-0 to close out the district portion of the schedule. Apollo struggled to take advantage of good field position numerous times, with senior quarterback Christian Combs’ 63 passing yards (10-21 passing) and 91 rushing yards (17 carries) accounting for over half of the team’s total yardage.
Senior running back Donte Dixon was limited to nine rushing yards against the Panthers, well below his game average of 50. The Eagles will need to turn that around this week, especially against a potent Greenwood offense that has scored 28-plus in five of its last six games.
The Gators are coming off of a 35-21 win at home over South Warren, improving to 7-2 overall on the season. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Huff struggled to complete passes in that game, but was able to do so four times for 143 passing yards and a touchdown.
Greenwood’s backfield picked up the slack, getting 112 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries from junior Tel Tel Long and 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns on six carries from senior Lofton Howard.
Apollo will look to limit the Gators offense on Friday night when they take them on at 7 p.m., looking to close out the regular season with a win on the road.
