Two families have been displaced after a fire inside a small duplex Friday afternoon on Carter Road, according to the Owensboro Fire Department. There were no injuries.

OFD Battalion Chief Richard Peach said officials believe the fire started outside the residence, located in the 1200 block of Carter Road across from Dollar General.

“We’re not sure what caused it to start, but it basically ran up the outside of the house and into the attic, and it basically destroyed that kitchen,” Peach said.

Peach said there was a lot of smoke and water damage on both sides of the building, while most of the fire damage was contained to one unit.

The unit with fire damage has already been deemed a total loss, while Peach said the other unit is likely also going to be considered a loss.

Peach said OFD got the call at 3:39 p.m. Peach said they extinguished the fire in about 30-40 minutes, but overhaul took another 60-90 minutes.

Red Cross was called in to assist both families. AMR Ambulance also responded to the scene.
