Boys basketball recap (Jan. 17): THS, DCHS, AHS

Trinity (Whitesville) and Daviess County put together complete games in their respective road wins on Tuesday, topping Cloverport and Meade County.

Trinity (Whitesville) vs Cloverport

The Raiders bounced back from a tough loss to Hancock County on Tuesday, dominating on both ends of the floor in a 61-37 win on the road over Cloverport.

Trinity (Whitesville) got off to a strong start, getting 10 points from senior Landon Smith en route to a 21-7 lead heading into the second. Senior Landon Huff followed his teammates’ performance up by grabbing seven of the team’s 14 the following quarter, sending the Raiders into the locker room with a 35-17 lead.

Head Coach Nathan West and company didn’t skip a beat in the second half either, holding Colverport to 10 points for the second and third straight quarters to close the door on a 61-37 win. Smith led all scorers with 20 points, while Huff was the only other player in double figures with 12.

Trinity improves to 10-7 overall with the win, now looking ahead to a road matchup with Grayson County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Daviess County vs Meade County

The Panthers were firing on all cylinders on Tuesday, playing well on both ends in an impressive 76-53 win over Meade County on the road to extend their winning streak to three games.

Daviess County and the Green Wave traded buckets back and forth to start, with the Panthers grabbing a narrow 13-12 lead going into the second quarter. It was there that sophomore Jaxon Brown (seven), junior Houston Oberst (six) and senior John McCain (four) combined for 17 of the team’s 21 to build Daviess County’s lead to 34-21 at halftime.

The Panthers didn’t let off the gas coming out of the locker room, as junior Gage Phelps led the way 11 of the team’s 21 in the third en route to a 55-35 lead going into the fourth. Senior Evan Hillard knocked down a pair of threes while Phelps added seven more points in the fourth to finish with a team-leading 22, as the pair of upperclassmen helped Daviess County wrap up the 76-53 win.

Oberst followed close behind Phelps with 14 on the night, while Brown added 13 and Hillard finished with nine on three threes. The Panthers improve to 7-9 with their third straight win, as they will look to keep things rolling against a tough Henderson County at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Apollo vs Breckinridge County

The Eagles couldn’t muster up enough offense on the road Tuesday, losing their straight with a 64-50 defeat to Breckinridge County.

Apollo got off to a rough start, as they were limited to a bucket and a free throw in the first quarter and went into the second down 17-4. The Eagles turned things around with 16 points the following quarter, but had a steep hole to climb out of now trailing 31-20 at halftime.

Apollo’s luck didn’t change in the second half though, as they were outscored 33-20 and ultimately fell 64-50. Senior Zjhan Tutt was the only player to score more than nine on the night for the Eagles, leading the team with 22 points.

The blue and white fall to 3-14 on the season with the loss, as they will now have a tall task in bouncing back against district foe Owensboro Catholic at 7 p.m. on Friday.
