Owensboro Municipal Utilities opened their “Little Pantry” on Thursday, a project that allows 24/7 access to resources such as food, toiletries, and household supplies free of charge to community members in need.
The pantry is currently packed with school supplies, sunscreen, and other summer necessities. It is located at the OMU Administrative Center at 2070 Tamarack Rd.
“We’ve seen many faces each and every day come through these doors. You know many of them are struggling,” General Manager Tim Lyons said. “…And our volunteer team believed this was just a great opportunity to give back to our community.”
They plan to rotate the supplies to offer seasonal items such as winter gloves, hats, or rain ponchos during the rainy season.
OMU staff and a committee will focus on maintaining its stock level planned to provide goods.
“I think it just truly epitomizes that we are local people,” Lyons said. “We’re providing local service to this community. So we’re very thankful for that.”
