The Lady Panther placed third overall in the first round of the Girls’ State Golf Tournament and advanced on to the second round. Apollo’s Mary Ann Lyons tied for 24th place and just barely missed out on the second round.
Baylie Billingsley led the team shooting for 81. She was followed by teammates Alexa Salamah who shot for 87, Claire Reynolds who shot for 88, Briley Billingsley who shot for 94 and Annalee Yager who shot for 95. Daviess County head coach Brandon Reynolds praised the team’s performance in the first round, and said their goal is to place top three at the State Tournament.
“Baylie played great today, Alexa had a great up and down on 18 and Claire had a great birdie on 17,” he said. “This time of the year it’s all about surviving and advancing.”
Apollo’s Mary Ann Lyons competed in the individual competition and shot for 85. Lyons narrowly missed qualifying for the second round as she needed an 84 to advance. Head coach David Lyons had faith in her as he thought she was going to qualify during the match, he said.
“Mary Ann got off to a slow start and finished strong,” he said. “Her driver was not her strong point until the last few holes. She played well enough that we thought she would qualify, but she missed the cut by one.”
