Owensboro looks to continue building up momentum at home against Marshall County after last week’s win, while Owensboro Catholic travel to Todd County Central and look to keep hold of the good form they’ve displayed so far. Apollo hosts Graves at home to try to get back on the winning track.

Owensboro Catholic, 6-0 (Class 2A, District 2)
at Todd County Central, 3-3 (Class 2A, District 2)

Highlights

Catholic are the favorites going into this district matchup. The speed Todd Central has means that the Aces’ defense must be on high alert throughout the game.

Last week

Owensboro Catholic: Won 62-12 against Crittenden County
Todd County Central: Won 41-26 against Russellville

Owensboro Catholic head coach Jason Morris:

We left off two seasons ago and really changed our focus on the way we practice and compliment the boys. For about two straight seasons now, we’ve treated every week the same. It allows our kids to not get out of routine because everybody, especially teenagers, are creatures of habit. We just keep the same routine.

Todd County has really good team speed. They actually have two or three kids who will be the fastest on the field. We have to make sure we keep those guys in front of us and do a good job tackling.

Graves County, 3-3 (Class 5A, District 1)
at Apollo, 1-5 (Class 5A, District 1)

Highlights

Apollo comes into this match off a tough loss against Owensboro. The Eagles need to put together a solid 48 minutes in order to get back into winning form. Graves has a strong running offense, so Apollo’s defense will have to cut off any runs early to avoid big gains of yards.

Last week

Graves: Won 20-14 against Madisonville-North Hopkins
Apollo: Lost 21-61 against Owensboro

Apollo head coach John Edge:

The biggest thing is harping on the kids that they’re prepared and ready to go as always. It’s one of the biggest things we do as the staff is make sure they’re prepared for anything. Sometimes being young, especially on the offensive line, you’ve gotta keep things in perspective. You might be pretty vanilla on offense and defense. Sometimes that can hurt you, but I’d rather be good at one thing than nothing at all. I think what we’re working on is being consistently good and finding that one thing.

Graves can run the ball really well. We struggle at the stopping run. Fortunately, we got some kids coming back from injuries that didn’t play in the Owensboro game. That will be helpful, but we still have to stop the run no matter what. Offensively we have to protect Max. Sometimes he’s running for his life, but that’s something that we’re working on this week. We really don’t want to run Max too much, but the biggest thing is we’re gonna let him be a good athlete back there and do what he’s gotta do.

Marshall County, 2-4 (Class 5A, District 1)
at Owensboro, 3-3 (Class 5A, District 1)

Highlights

With a win this Friday, the Red Devils have a chance to have a positive record for the first time this season. To get there, they need to beat a struggling Marshall team who just last week secured the first victory of their last four games. Owensboro’s offense has shown good form recently, so limiting the amount of mistakes on defense will be key.

Last week

Marshall: Won 36-7 against Muhlenberg
Owensboro: Won 61-21 against Apollo

Owensboro head coach Jay Fallin:

We’re just gonna keep doing the things we’ve been working on in practice, working hard and paying attention to detail. We’re trying to find things in practice, in films and games on Friday that we’re not doing at the level that we need to so we can work on that and keep the momentum going. Marshall is big, strong and well-coached. We’ll just need to be prepared for a full 48-minute game.
