Faith Fest Owensboro is hosting its inaugural spring event today at the Islamic Center of Owensboro with a presentation entitled “Waiting on God.”

The Islamic Center of Owensboro is located at 3131 Alvey Park Drive West. The event begins at 1:30 p.m., with the joint presentation being given by Dr. Kalik and Fr. John Thomas.

Kalik is the president of the Islamic Center and Thomas is the rector of St. Stephen Cathedral. They will offer personal reflections on the spiritual practice of waiting and their experience of their respective traditions’ holiest night.

Organizers noted that the third ashra of Ramadan will begin on Holy Saturday this year.

“The third period of Ramadan includes the observance of the Night of Power or the Night of Determination commemorating the revelation of the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad,” according to a release from Faith Fest. “Devout Muslims pray to share the same insight into the Qur’an as the Prophet had. The night is called Laylat al-Qdar, the holiest night of the Islamic year.”

The release said that Holy Saturday is called the Sabbath of Easter and is the holiest night of the Catholic year.

“The observance begins after sundown and includes waiting for the resurrection by reading the Christian Scriptures that tell the history of salvation and welcoming new Catholics with the Sacraments of Initiation,” the release said.

The event will begin with Jummah (Friday congregational prayer) at 1:30 p.m. and continue with these special presentations. The public is welcome.
