After being sworn in at Thursday’s Fiscal Court meeting, David Reynolds became an Assistant County Attorney. With 26 years of experience, he knows he still has some things to learn and is eager to start.

Reynolds is a Christian County native who moved to Owensboro in 1998 and opened his private practice shortly thereafter. Since then, he has primarily practiced creditors’ rights law, representing lenders in state and bankruptcy court.

He plans to split the time between his private practice and County work with County Attorney John Burlew. In this position, Reynolds said his primary focus will be on dependency and neglect cases in juvenile court, an area he practiced earlier in his career.

“Back then, you would represent either the child or parents in those cases, and that’s what many attorneys do today,” Reynolds said. “Those processes deal with children who need someone looking out for them and who are in the court system. This time, it’s just coming from a different role as the County Attorney instead of representing the parties in the case now.”

He said the knowledge from the two practices doesn’t translate quite laterally, but the experience in court will be the most essential trait he brings to the new position.

Reynolds has already served for the Attorney’s office, as he recalled a case on Thursday, which he referred to as a great learning experience while transitioning into the new role.

“It was pretty similar to exactly what it was 25 years ago,” he said. “I’m looking forward to settling into the new role, learning and improving as I go.”

As he gets settled in, Reynolds said he appreciates having the chance to serve the County he’s called home over the last 26 years.

“I am very appreciative of John [Burlew] for giving me the opportunity to pursue this shift in my career,” Reynolds said. “I plan to devote the same high level of attention to this job as I have in the work that I do for my private practice clients.”
