Baseball recap (April 13): AHS, DCHS, OHS, OCHS

Daviess County played two games as part of the David Taylor CDJR Dinger Wood Bat Classic, and Owensboro Catholic had a double header as well. Meanwhile, Apollo and Owensboro both took home wins on the day.

AHS 2, McCracken Co. 0

Apollo had a close game against McCracken County where they came out with the 2-0 win. 

Apollo scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning, and they did their best on defense to hold that 1-run lead for the next three innings. Although they struggled to extend their lead in that time, they broke through again in the fifth inning to make the score 2-0. They continued to protect the lead in the final two innings and got the 2-0 win. 

On the mound for the Eagles was Noah Cook who had 6 strikeouts across 7 innings to help shut down McCracken. At the plate, Ty Lillpop had 1 RBI and scored 1 run. Ryleigh Logan had the other RBI, and Brock Burger scored the other run for AHS. 

DCHS

Daviess County competed in the David Taylor CDJR Dinger Wood Bat Classic where they faced off against Harrisburg, IL and Caldwell County. 

They were victorious in their first game as they defeated Harrisburg 2-0. The Panthers scored their first run in the bottom of the opening inning. After a scoreless second inning, Daviess County made it a 2-run lead in the second inning, and they protected their lead for the rest of the game to secure the 2-0 win. 

Brett Poole pitched for 6 innings and recorded 6 strikeouts while Carter Nichols had 2 strikeouts in 1 inning. Noah Ranburger had an RBI, and Lucas Ward and Logan Mewes both scored 1 run each. 

In their second game DCHS was defeated by Caldwell County 6-1. The first inning went scoreless before Caldwell gained a 3-run cushion in the second inning. Caldwell extended their lead with another run in the third while Daviess County struggled to get past their defense. DC would score in the fifth inning, but Caldwell scored a run in the fifth and in the sixth innings to close out the game at 6-1. 

On the mound, Benjamin Watkins and Gage Hagan combined for 6 strikeouts on the night. At the plate, Ward had the sole RBI while Nichols scored the lone run. 

OHS 7, Christian Co. 5

Owensboro was slated to play a double header as well, but their game against Calloway County was canceled. They still picked up a 7-5 win in their intense game against Christian County. 

Christian struck first as they scored 2 runs in the opening inning. The Red Devils brought the score back to a tie with 2 runs in the next two innings. After a scoreless fourth inning, OHS took the lead with 3 runs in top of the fifth and Christian scored 1 run to bring the score to 5-3. Christian tied the game back up with two runs in the sixth. Owensboro took the win in dramatic fashion as they scored 2 runs in the top of the seventh and shut down Christian in the bottom of the inning to close out the game at 7-5. 

Lake Wilson pitched for the first 5 innings and racked up 7 strikeouts. Will Rickard pitched to close out the game and had 2 strikeouts to help hold off Christian. Brady Benjamin had 3 RBIs, and Ty Ashley hit a double to go along with his 1 RBI and 1 scored run. Evan Hampton had an RBI and scored 2 runs, and Cayden Ray had an RBI with 1 scored run. Wilson and Will Hume scored 1 run each as well.

OCHS 

Owensboro Catholic had varied success in a double head that saw them take on Monroe County and Evansville Mater Dei, IN.

Catholic were defeated in their first game 8-3 by Evansville Mater Dei. Catholic fell behind early as Mater Dei scored a run in the first and second innings. OCHS found their footing with a run in the third inning, but Mater Dei scored 2 more runs in the fourth. The Aces scored 2 in the fifth to cut into the lead, but Mater Dei scored 4 runs in the sixth to close out the game at 8-3. 

On the mound was Gentry Atwell and Chase Keller who combined for 5 strikeouts during the game. At the plate, Jake Murphy hit a double and had 2 RBIs. Drew Miles scored 2 runs and Jack Krampe scored the other for OCHS.

The Aces turned things around in their game against Monroe County as they had a 27-4 blowout win. Both teams came out swinging as the first inning ended 2-2. After a scoreless second inning, Catholic took the lead with 1 run in the third. They added 3 more runs in the fourth before scoring 5 more in the top of the fifth to run away with the lead. Monroe scored 2 in the bottom of the fifth, but this is when Catholic kicked things into overdrive. The Aces didn’t hold back as they scored an impressive 16 runs in the final inning to take the 27-4 win. 

Brady Atwell had a big game at the plate as he hit 2 triples, a double, had 4 hits, 3 RBIs and scored 4 runs. Ben Hyland had an impressive game as well as he hit 2 doubles, had 5 RBIs and scored 4 runs. Christopher Burns had 4 RBIs, 4 hits and 1 scored run. Deuce Sims and Eli Blair both had 3 RBIs and scored 2 runs each. Parker Heistand had 2 RBIs and scored 4 runs, and Mason Moser had 3 hits, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Barrett Evans hit a double, had 1 RBI and 3 runs scored while Mason Moser had 2 RBIs, 3 hits and 2 runs scored. Houston Flynn hit a double, had 1 RBI and 2 runs scored as well. 

On the mound for OCHS was Jaxson White with 4 strikeouts across 5 innings, and Evans had 1 strikeout in 1 inning.
