KY 54 from Heartland Crossing Blvd to Bold Forbes Way will experience lane shifts and closures starting Sunday night as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet works on the road’s layout.

Drivers can expect the turning lane to be closed between those two roads while teams work on widening the 1.3 miles of road. Yager Materials crews will begin repainting the street lanes to accommodate the shifting of both eastbound lanes and ridding the highway of the middle turning lane for most of the roadway.

Yager Materials is the project’s contracting company. They are expected to work nightly on July 14 and 17 until the lane shift is completed throughout the entire construction zone.

“This investment will provide safer and easier access to an already growing and vibrant area as Owensboro and Daviess County continue to attract new businesses and jobs that will be part of our new Kentucky home for generations,” said Gov. Andy Beshear.

Since March, the contractors have moved and relocated utilities along the roadway, making room to widen KY 54 from 4 to 6 lanes. More than 32,000 vehicles are estimated to use the route to access businesses off the roadway.

Phase I construction is scheduled to begin on July 22. When phase one is completed, work will switch to the westbound side, with those lanes being shifted.

A new concrete median will be constructed during the third and final phase, and asphalt will be applied to the widened roadway. The project is expected to be completed in late 2026. Crews plan to work 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily throughout construction, although occasional night hours may be necessary.

As construction progresses, KYTC urges drivers to pay attention to signage and other traffic control devices that will alert them of changes to work zones and traffic flow, including potential lane restrictions and lane shifts.
