2024 City of Owensboro Christmas Card, designed by Aaron Kizer

This 2024 City of Owensboro Christmas Card, titled “Coming to Town,” will be available for purchase starting Wednesday. The City’s card was again designed by Owensboro native and renowned artist Aaron Kizer, who drew inspiration for this year’s image from his mother who died just over a week ago.

Kizer said he works best under pressure and typically waits until just before deadlines to begin working on his projects, and this card was no different. What was different, however, was that his mother died just days before this deadline.

The design features the William H. Natcher Bridge reimagined as a Christmas tree — a concept rooted in a conversation Kizer had with his mother during a drive across the bridge.

“She said, ‘You know, this bridge looks like a Christmas tree. Maybe you could paint the bridge to look like a Christmas tree for Christmas,’” Kizer said. “When I sat down to create the card, I remembered that conversation and wanted it to be meaningful for her. She loved Christmas cards so much. She saved every one I’ve ever done.”

He said the card is simple yet clever and reflects his preferred style.

“I prefer simplicity and cleverness over perfect execution,” he said. “It’s an illustration of the Natcher Bridge as you’re crossing it toward Owensboro, but with a Christmas tree twist.”

This marks the 36th annual Christmas card for the City. Kizer designed the City’s card for the first time in 2018, taking over a years-long slot that had previously been filled by artist Rex Robinson, and he’s done it every year since.

Kizer admitted that he wasn’t a major holiday fan, but he always finds joy in being able to do this for his hometown.

“I’m not really the holly jolly type of dude,” Kizer said. “I like to capture real, raw emotions in my work. But this project was deeply personal and meaningful.”

The opportunity to design the card is a full-circle moment for Kizer, who grew up in Owensboro without envisioning art as a viable career.

“It’s everything I hoped for as a kid,” he said. “This is more than just a Christmas card — it’s about the acceptance of what I’ve done and what this city means to me.”

Those interested can purchase the 2024 Owensboro Christmas Card for $2 each starting November 20 at Owensboro City Hall (101 East 4th Street). A limited number of cards are available. City Hall is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on observed holidays.
