In a pivotal city-county matchup, Owensboro took down Apollo, while Daviess County and Hancock County both lost.
Owensboro 62, Apollo 18
Shalyn Sprinkles hit three threes to go along with her team-high 19 points to help power the Lady Devils past Apollo 62-18. Kelleisha Haught scored nine of her 13 points in the first half, while Heleina John finished with 10 points.
“We came into tonight’s game with the goal of winning our first district game and we were successful at that,” Owensboro head coach Jansen Locher said. “We were able to play a lot oof players to get some varsity experience early in the season.”
For Apollo, LaShay Vera and Aubrey Johnson led the way with six points each. Mattingly Taylor (3), Jessica Lee (2), and Emersyn Bullington (1) round out the scoring.
Meade County 70, Daviess County 60
Kennedy Lane led Daviess County with 20 points, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Meade County 70-60. The Lady Panthers had no answer for Peyton Bradley, who scored a game-high 33 points, 21 of it coming in the second half.
“Peyton Bradley is phenomenal,” Daviess County head coach Natalie Payne said. “We tried a lot of different things to slow her down, but she found a way. When she wasn’t scoring, she was finding her teammates… Meade made some big plays down the stretch in the fourth quarter.”
Zoey Beehn was second on Daviess County in scoring with 19 points, while Lily Hoagland added 13 points.
“My kids played hard, and we learned a lot tonight,” Payne said. “At this point in the season, it’s about learning and getting better each time you step on the floor.
Butler County 70, Hancock County 44
Carolina Jones led the Lady Hornets with 14 points and four assists as they fell to Butler County at home 70-44. Jordyn Waltrip added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Madyson Higdon recorded four points and five steals.
“Our girls continued to play hard,” Hancock County head coach Kevin Husk said. “I’m very proud of their effort and determination all night. Butler continued to press us all game and we played a much better second half. We have got to do the little things right like boxing out and rebounding, stepping to our passes, and seeing the court. I thought in the second half we showed improvement in some of those areas.”
