McLean County Public Schools have suspended all classes and activities until further notice as the region faces what officials are calling one of the worst flood disasters in the county’s history.
District leaders announced the decision Thursday afternoon, citing widespread flooding across the county and a large number of displaced families. The closure applies to all school-related functions, including sports and other spring activities.
“Our job as a school district is to look out for every child’s welfare,” the district stated. “We sympathize with students and athletes not being able to participate in spring activities at this time, but the district has been advised legally not to put anyone in a situation that may cause harm.”
Officials said the district is not implementing Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) days at this time but is instead completely shutting down operations. The district plans to reevaluate the situation next week and provide an update on when student activities and NTI learning may resume.
“We will resume activities once the flood water starts to considerably recede,” the statement read. “We will also send out a message early next week to explain when we will be able to resume our Disaster NTI Days.”
District officials extended their thoughts to everyone affected, urging the community to stay safe during this time.
