MentorKids Kentucky is expanding its annual Rugged Race this year, adding new trail running events while continuing its mission of raising money to provide free mentoring programs for youth in Owensboro and Daviess County.
The community fundraiser is scheduled for Aug. 1 and will feature the organization’s signature family-friendly obstacle course alongside new 5K and 10K trail races. Organizers also have introduced an Xtreme 10K division that combines both trail running and obstacles for participants seeking a greater challenge.
“Our annual Rugged Race helps underwrite the programs we provide at MentorKids Kentucky, and because we don’t charge for our services, events like this are essential to sustaining our mission,” said Andy Basham, the organization’s director of development.
Basham said the expanded format is designed to make the event accessible to more people.
“This year, we expanded beyond our classic obstacle races to remove barriers and make the event more accessible, adding 5K and 10K trail run options so more people can participate,” he said. “For those looking for an extra challenge, our Xtreme 10K Rugged Race combines both obstacles and a trail run.”
The Rugged Race is one of MentorKids Kentucky’s largest annual fundraisers, bringing together families, businesses and volunteers while directly supporting mentoring services provided at no cost to local families. Funds raised help children from single-parent and non-traditional households connect with consistent adult mentors who provide guidance, encouragement and stability.
In addition to racers, MentorKids Kentucky is encouraging community members to volunteer.
“For those who may not want to race, we would love to have them join us as volunteers,” Basham said.
He said every role contributes to the organization’s ability to continue serving local youth.
“Whether someone is participating in the Rugged Race or volunteering, every part of this event helps ensure we can continue serving youth and families across Daviess County,” Basham said.
Founded in 2002, MentorKids Kentucky serves children ages 6 to 14 in Owensboro and Daviess County. The organization’s mission is to positively impact the lives of children from single-parent and non-traditional households through intentional mentoring relationships that build character, confidence, resilience and life skills.
