Handwritten letters kept a soldier and his wife connected through deployments, and now their story is preserved in song. Enlisted: Songs from a Veteran released its latest single, “SGT Mike Mixson (Read Letters),” on Friday, blending themes of love, faith, and military service.

Inspired by the real-life experiences of SGT Mike Mixson, the single highlights the power of written words to sustain a marriage and strengthen faith during military service. The lyrics also draw on the “red letters” of Scripture, underscoring the couple’s reliance on their spiritual foundation.

“This song is more than music. It’s a living love story told through the letters that carried a marriage, a faith, and a soldier through the challenges of military life,” said Brian Basham, co-creator of Enlisted: Songs from a Veteran. “Our goal with every release is to honor the sacrifice and humanity of those who served, and Mike’s story represents both beautifully.”

The single was recorded at Gray Sky Music in Owensboro and is available on all major streaming platforms.

Enlisted was founded by Basham, who leads Veterans Empowered Together, and Randy Lanham of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum. Presented by AMVETS Post 75, the program pairs veterans with professional musicians to create original music each month, with a goal of sharing stories and fostering healing.

Founded in Owensboro, the initiative continues to grow as a platform for remembrance and community by preserving the personal stories of veterans through music.
