A new event in Owensboro is putting a spotlight on cancer awareness and local resources while raising money to support those affected by the disease.

The Pink Mic Project will be held from 3-6 p.m. October 2 at Cromwell Media, 1115 Tamarack Road. Presented by Owensboro Health, the event will include a live broadcast on 100.5 The Party, informational booths, and fundraising opportunities to benefit the Owensboro Health Foundation and the Kentucky Cancer Program.

Organizer Erin Owen, a Cromwell Media broadcaster and breast cancer survivor, said the event is designed to connect people with information and encouragement.

“I had been diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2013, so this is just kind of always been something that I wanted to be able to do,” Owen said. “Now, being at Cromwell, I’ve got a platform to use. It’s just kind of an awareness event. I think people get into a diagnosis and just don’t really know what to do or how to go about things. We wanted to be able to have an opportunity for people to come by and see what kind of local resources are out there.”

The Kentucky Cancer Program and Horses and Hope will have representatives available to share information about screenings, support groups, and financial resources. Attendees can also meet others who have gone through similar experiences.

“There are resources out there to help people take those proactive steps,” Owen said. “We also want this to be a place where people can come together, share stories with each other, and kind of inspire each other along the way.”

The event will also feature a silent auction, including four pit tickets to Ole 60’s New Year’s Eve concert and a 10-year bottle of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. Proceeds will be donated to local support programs.

Owen said she hopes the Pink Mic Project will not only raise funds but also provide encouragement.

“I’ve had a lot of people help me during my journey, and I just feel like it’s my lot in life to pay that back and help people wherever I can,” she said. “Positivity and having a good support system is the best medicine.”
