The Owensboro Black Expo is inviting the community to come together for a Taste of Expo on Saturday at the H.L. Neblett Community Center. The event begins at 4 p.m. and will feature more than 35 local cooks serving up dishes ranging from barbecue to greens and desserts.

Admission is $12 in advance or $15 at the door, and attendees can sample as much food as they want. The evening will also include a live DJ, door prizes, and raffles.

“This is pretty much a taste where everybody comes out to celebrate each other,” said Amanda Johnson, a member of the Black Expo. “It’s just going to be a good afternoon.”

The spotlight chef for the night will be Sheila Crow of Pinky’s, who plans to serve one of her chili dishes along with a dessert. Other contributions will come from churches and community members, including First Street Baptist, Zion Baptist, and Roll Tide Barbecue.

Johnson said proceeds from the event will support future Black Expo programming, including the annual Juneteenth celebration, a Christmas party, and Halloween activities like trunk-or-treats at the Neblett Center and the Dugan Best Recreation Center.

“It’s more than just food,” Johnson said. “It’s about reminding us that we all love each other, no matter our background. Everybody’s welcome. Leave politics at the door and just enjoy yourself.”

Following the food and festivities at the Neblett Center, community members are encouraged to head to the Dugan Best Center for a Family Feud-style competition later in the evening.

Tickets can be purchased in advance through the Owensboro Black Expo Facebook page.
