As many families continue to feel the financial strain from the ongoing federal government shutdown, Beverly’s Hearty Slice (BHS) is stepping up its efforts to provide relief through a series of community support events in November.

Founder Travis Owsley said the organization is determined to help those struggling with basic needs like utilities, food, and clothing.

“We will not let our community suffer during these tough times,” Owsley said. “If our neighbors are hurting, we’re going to do everything we can to be there for them.”

BHS will begin by distributing 100 $30 OMU vouchers on November 7 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Kendall-Perkins Park. The vouchers are intended to help families pay their Owensboro Municipal Utilities bills. Attendees must bring a copy of their OMU bill to receive assistance. In addition to vouchers, the event will include free Little Caesars Pizza and bottled water.

On November 14, Beverly’s Hearty Slice will collaborate with Shiloh’s Lounge to serve 120 pulled pork plates that include baked beans and potato salad. Owsley said the partnership allows BHS to continue reaching more families each week with warm meals and community support.

Later in the month, the group will host its annual Thanksgiving event on November 21 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Owensboro Convention Center. Owsley said this year’s giveaway has been expanded to 400 take-home Thanksgiving meals—each including ham, macaroni and cheese, green beans, and corn.

The event will also feature a coat drive in partnership with Haley McGinnis Funeral Home & Crematory, with a goal of providing over 100 winter coats to anyone in need. Attendees will also be treated to hot chocolate, Pepsi products, and Little Caesars Pizza, thanks to sponsors including Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Specialty Foods Group, and others.

Owsley said BHS hopes to continue offering regular support throughout November by hosting weekly pizza events every Friday, depending on volunteer availability.

“To the families being affected by the shutdown — we see you, and we’re sorry you’re going through this,” Owsley said. “We’re here to make sure no one in our community goes hungry or cold this winter.”

Beverly’s Hearty Slice is also donating $1,000 to help other local food trucks provide meals, ensuring residents have more variety than just pizza.

Those interested in volunteering or donating toward meal assistance can find more information on the Beverly’s Hearty Slice Facebook page or contribute directly through their Venmo account.
