A local business is stepping up to aid victims of the devastating Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica by collecting non-perishable food, clothing, toiletries, and other essential supplies for shipment to the island.

The drive is being led by Jamaican Yard Vibes, located at 2845 West Parrish Avenue, Suite C. According to co-owners Dwayne and Shanetha Whyte, the campaign will continue until November 20, with drop-off times available on Mondays and Tuesdays “anytime.” Donations may also be arranged for pickup by calling 270-925-4810.

“If someone wants to, they can call the number on the truck, and we can have somebody meet them with donations while we’re still working,” Dwayne Whyte said.

He added that the aim is to ship the items before the duty and tax deadlines close, and that they are working directly to get relief to residents in need without relying on a large organization.

The Whytes noted that Dwayne’s family and friends in Jamaica have been personally affected.

“He had family lose their homes. A lot of people have suffered. So it’s to help everybody who needs help. We want to make sure people who really need it get it,” Shanetha Whyte said.

They said items being gathered include canned food, clothing, pillows, sleeping bags, cleaning supplies, and children’s books and toys to support families and youth affected by the storm.

According to the Associated Press, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on October 28 as a Category 5 storm with sustained winds near 185 mph. Some western areas, including the town of Black River, were described as “ground zero” for the destruction, with roofs torn from homes and businesses. The storm left thousands without power, blocked roads with debris, and caused widespread flooding and communication outages across several parishes.

Flyers on the business’s Facebook page illustrate scenes of destruction in Jamaica and list drop-off details.

Together, the Whytes said, “Every helping hand and act of kindness makes a difference. One Love.”
