The Owensboro Branch of the NAACP will host two major events in January: an annual observance honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the organization’s signature fundraiser, the Freedom Fund Banquet.

The MLK observance is scheduled for Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, located at 2711 Cravens Avenue. The Rev. DeMarcus Curry, pastor of Asbury, will serve as the host, and Reverend George Madison of First Missionary Baptist Church in Henderson will deliver the keynote message.

The NAACP will also present the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award during the event.

This year’s theme is “Keep Moving Forward,” inspired by Dr. King’s speech “What Is Your Life’s Blueprint?” Local NAACP President Michael Johnson said the message emphasizes self-worth, commitment to excellence, and a dedication to principles such as beauty, love, and justice.

“Dr. King emphasized the responsibility to seek social justice and improve life for everyone, regardless of age or background,” Johnson said. “This event is about recommitting ourselves to that mission.”

While the observance is not a formal fundraiser, donations are welcome to support the local branch’s advocacy, education, and outreach programs.

The organization’s primary fundraiser, the Freedom Fund Banquet, will be held Jan. 24 from 6-8 p.m. at Rogers Hall on the Kentucky Wesleyan College campus. This year’s theme is “Moving Forward: The Importance of You.”

“We want folks to join with us as we continue to move forward and make progress,” Johnson said.

Tickets are $65 per plate or $450 for a table of eight. The keynote speaker will be Kelly Cunningham, president of the NAACP Kentucky State Conference. The evening will feature music by Alma Randolph Crump and presentations of several awards, including the NAACP Community Award, President’s Award, and Organizational Sponsor Award. The Travis Leon Jackson Scholarship will also be presented.

Adrian Taylor, president of the KWC NAACP chapter, will serve as emcee. Johnson said both the KWC and Owensboro High School NAACP youth chapters are active and will participate in the event.

Johnson noted that while the Owensboro branch has existed since 1948, the MLK observance and Freedom Fund Banquet have each been long-standing traditions — “at least 10 years, probably more,” he said.

“Our work remains vital,” Johnson said. “Whether it’s engaging with the local school board, city government, or advocating for economic justice, we’re committed to improving the lives of everyone in our community. We welcome people of all backgrounds to join us in that work.”
