Update, Dec. 30 at 1:05 p.m. — The Ohio County Coroner’s Office has identified the man found dead on Dec. 29 on the porch of Green River Baptist Church in Cromwell as Phillip Wayne Morris, 62, of Morgantown.

According to Deputy Coroner Donnie Pearson, Morris is believed to have stopped at the church during severe weather on Dec. 28. Officials believe he may have suffered a heart attack, possibly related to underlying health conditions and complicated by a sudden drop in temperatures. Morris was a native of Ohio County. The reason for his travel that day remains unclear.

Original story, Dec. 29 at 6:05 p.m. — The Ohio County Coroner’s Office is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who was found deceased on Monday.

According to the coroner’s office, deputies responded to the scene after the body of an adult white male was discovered lying on the porch of Green River Baptist Church on KY 231 South in Cromwell. The man is believed to be between 60 and 70 years old, approximately 6 feet tall, and “very undernourished,” officials said.

Officials said the man had long, thinning blond hair and a beard, with no tattoos or distinguishing marks. He was wearing a red, white, and blue baseball cap with a smiley face, an aqua green jacket with a southwestern-style stripe across the chest, cartoon-print pajama pants, and a gold initial ring on his left pinky finger. He also had a fairly new blue mountain bike.

Investigators said the man was reportedly seen earlier in the day near Jones Funeral Home in Morgantown between 1-2 p.m. The coroner’s office believes he may have been seeking shelter from the rain overnight and possibly died from exposure.

Anyone with information that could help identify the man is asked to contact the Ohio County Coroner’s Office at 270-875-3926. Officials said the goal is to make a positive identification and notify next of kin.
