WBKR’s annual St. Jude Radiothon brought in $405,253.12 over the course of the two-day event, shattering records for the biggest amount raised in the radiothon’s 22-year history.
“It’s the most ever,” said WBKR personality Chad Benefield. “It’s the first time we have crossed the 400K mark.”
The final total was revealed with a ceremonial check presentation surrounded by supporters, volunteers, and local families who have helped power the station’s decades-long commitment to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“It’s an astounding result that reflects infinite hard work and massive amounts of heart,” Benefield said. “There’s a saying that ‘It takes a village.’ Our village shows up, every single time, and moves mountains. I am so proud of this St. Jude army we have created. There’s no doubt St. Jude is a place where miracles happen. I am becoming more and more convinced that we are capable of them, too.”
Mary Katherine Maddox, who cohosts WBKR’s morning show with Benefield, said the experience of watching the community rally together year after year is both humbling and inspiring.
“It’s an amazing thing to watch everyone come together. It definitely restores my faith in humanity,” Maddox said. “All of the credit goes to the community — our Partners in Hope, the Angels for Ashley team, local businesses, restaurants, fundraisers, volunteers, special guests, and even random people who drop by with donations. They’re the reason this works.”
Each year, the WBKR St. Jude Radiothon combines heartfelt patient stories, live interviews, and community-driven fundraising efforts to support the mission of St. Jude, where no family ever receives a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food.
The 2026 event once again demonstrated the generosity and spirit of the Owensboro area, with individuals, businesses, and civic groups coming together to make a difference.
Benefield said the energy and impact of the radiothon continue to grow each year, a reflection of what’s possible when a community unites for a cause.
