The Men’s Mass Community Choir has announced plans for its 21st season, beginning with a pair of spring concerts and a community appearance tied to the Easter season.
The choir’s first scheduled performance will be held at Zion Baptist Church at 3 p.m. on March 29. An encore concert is set for 3 p.m. on April 12 at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. The ensemble is also scheduled to sing at the Owensboro Family Y’s annual Good Friday Breakfast.
The 30-member gospel group will be led this year by Michael Johnson, a local evangelist, singer, and longtime member of the choir. The organization was formed more than two decades ago by the late Larry “Chick” Owen and now draws members from more than a dozen churches and denominations throughout the Owensboro area.
According to Johnson, the choir continues to emphasize fellowship and accessibility for men of varying musical backgrounds.
“Our motto is ‘singing praises to God,’ and we enjoy doing just that,” said Johnson. “The fellowship among men of faith from diverse backgrounds is what everyone enjoys the most. Doing concerts and special appearances is just icing on the cake. Anyone who has seen us perform knows of the hope and joy we share.”
This year’s concerts will feature special guest singer Tara Estes, a well-known local vocalist active in Owensboro’s theater community. Estes built a strong regional following through years of performances at Goldie’s Opryhouse and currently serves as an assistant vice president and financial advisor with Baird Wealth Management in Owensboro.
In addition to Estes’ appearance, the concerts will include praise and gospel selections led by several members of the choir.
