Director Teresa Wills is inviting performers of all ages to audition for Theatre Workshop’s upcoming production of “Our Town,” calling it a chance for both newcomers and experienced actors to take the stage. Auditions will be held on Sunday and Monday.

Written by Thornton Wilder, “Our Town” remains one of the most enduring works in American theater, said Wills, who added that the decision to revive the classic felt timely.

“It’s an older play, but it’s a classic,” Wills said. “I just felt like it was time to bring it back.”

She said the three-act play explores everyday life, love and marriage, and ultimately the fragility of life itself. The story centers on Emily and George, two teenagers whose lives unfold alongside their families and neighbors.

“It’s about daily life and the simple things we often overlook,” Wills said. “It really points out how we don’t always appreciate the day-to-day moments while we’re living them.”

Wills noted that the production will introduce several creative elements while preserving the play’s minimalist spirit.

“It’s still minimalistic, but it’s definitely going to be different than what people are used to,” Wills said.

Among the changes are the addition of live music and a live foley artist — someone who produces sound effects during the performance — to enhance scenes traditionally performed through pantomime.

“You’ll have somebody making those sounds live,” Wills said. “I think that’ll be really cool.”

Auditions will be held at Trinity Centre on March 1 at 2 p.m. and March 2 at 6:30 p.m. Those auditioning only need to attend one session. Callbacks will be conducted on March 3 at 6 p.m., if needed.

Wills said the show typically requires a cast of 25 to 30 performers.

“It’s a very large cast,” Wills said. “There are roles for teenagers, children, and adults of all ages.”

She emphasized that the production offers opportunities for actors at every experience level.

“There are some really large parts that are fairly complex, but there are also smaller parts,” Wills said. “It’s a good way for people to get their feet wet.”

Wills added that the play is particularly welcoming for male performers.

“It’s very male-heavy, which is sometimes hard to fill,” Wills said.

In addition to performers, Theatre Workshop is seeking volunteers interested in set construction, decorating, costuming, and live sound production.

Performances of “Our Town” will be staged at the Empress Theatre on April 24-26 and May 1-3. The production is sponsored by RiverValley Behavioral Health.

Tickets are available by calling the box office at 270-683-5333 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday or by visiting theatreworkshop.org/tickets.
