The Daviess County High School football teams hosts Owensboro Catholic in their home opener Friday night, and they’ll play for the first time in the newly renovated Reid Stadium.

Ahead of the 7 p.m. kickoff will be a ceremony honoring members of the 1958 Panthers’ team who were the first to compete on the original Reid Stadium more than 60 years ago. That team beat Crittenden County 19-7.

The ceremony honoring the 1958 football players, cheerleaders and team manager will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Others to be recognized are the DCPS Board of Education including past chairman Mike Clark, RBS Design Team, Danco Construction and the DCPS Maintenance Department, whose contributions help in the process of obtaining and installing the new athletic field.

The ceremony will also include a moment of silence to honor former DCHS football coach David Barnes, who died Aug. 17, as well as Doug Wetzel, a friend and supporter of the Panthers for more than 40 years who died July 19. Members of the 2019 team will wear two decals reading “Once a Panther, Always a Panther” on their helmets this season in honor of the two men.
