Kathryn “Katy” Harrison has been named principal at Sorgho Elementary School, with the announcement made Thursday afternoon ahead of a reception welcoming her to the role. She will begin her new position on July 1.
Harrison began her educational career in 2002 with Owensboro Public Schools as an elementary classroom teacher at Owensboro 5-6 Center. She later served as a classroom teacher at Cravens Elementary and Newton Parrish through 2019, focusing on innovative lesson planning, self-paced learning, and communication with students, staff, and parents.
After her time in the classroom, Harrison was named instructional coach at Estes Elementary, where she served for six years. In that role, she supported student learning, provided professional development, assisted with scheduling, led MTSS core teams, analyzed student data, and helped develop family engagement opportunities.
She currently serves as assistant principal at Estes Elementary, a position she has held for the past year. Her responsibilities have included supervising teaching and learning, maintaining an effective school climate, evaluating instructional processes, overseeing curriculum implementation, and managing schoolwide initiatives, including the Positive Behavior Intervention System and special education programs.
Harrison holds a Master’s degree in Administration from Western Kentucky University, earned in 2023, and a Master’s in Education from Indiana Wesleyan University, completed in 2006. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2002. She also achieved National Board Teacher certification in literacy in 2010 and was recertified in 2021. She is a graduate of Apollo High School.
“I am honored to serve as the next instructional leader at Sorgho Elementary School and to join the Wildcat family. Sorgho has an excellent reputation in the community, and I look forward to building on that strong foundation. Together, we will celebrate our successes, take a thoughtful look at areas for growth, and set high expectations for ourselves and one another. With a shared commitment to excellence, I am dedicated to ensuring the success of every Wildcat, every day.”
Harrison said she plans to prioritize relationships as she transitions into the role.
“I am committed to listening, learning, and building strong relationships as we move forward together. My goal is not just to lead, but to support, collaborate, and ensure that every student, staff, and family feels valued and empowered while at Sorgho.”
Daviess County Public Schools Assistant Superintendent for Human Services Dr. April Devine said the district conducted a thorough selection process.
“Daviess County Public Schools has established a collaborative, thoughtful, and rigorous process for selecting school principals. We were fortunate to have an exceptional pool of candidates for Sorgho Elementary. Through surveys and feedback sessions, Sorgho stakeholders expressed a desire for a student-centered leader who is hardworking, visible, and focused on academics and achievement. We are thrilled to introduce Katy Harrison as the next principal of Sorgho Elementary. Mrs. Harrison is a dedicated advocate for students and a passionate champion of excellence.”
