Longtime local nurse practitioner Tisha Higgs has opened her own family medicine practice in Owensboro, aiming to provide patients with personalized care and flexibility.
Higgs Family Care recently opened at 2816 Veach Road and is owned by Higgs, who spent more than a decade working in family medicine with Owensboro Health before deciding to branch out on her own. She said she was grateful for the experience there, but felt it was time for something different.
“I didn’t leave on bad terms,” she said. “Just wanted to get out on my own.”
Originally from Murray, Higgs said she worked as a nurse for 15 years before earning her doctorate degree as a family nurse practitioner from Murray State University. She and her husband Sean later moved to Owensboro because of his military career with the National Guard.
Higgs said the idea of opening her own practice had been discussed for several years before she finally decided to move forward last fall.
“I think just independence, having a little bit more control over my schedule, a little bit more control over the time I get with my patients,” she said of why she wanted to start her how practice. “I have the best patients in the world, and I have built some really good relationships that way.”
She said maintaining those relationships and being able to spend more time with patients was a major motivation behind the move.
“I didn’t want to rush,” Higgs said. “I want to be able to sit and talk with them — not just about their health. We talk about their family, their kids, their grandkids, their dogs. I appreciate that part of it, and I wanted to make sure I could continue to do that.”
Higgs Family Care provides family medicine services for patients of all ages. The practice offers preventive care and treatment for chronic conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
The office currently has two employees — Higgs and a medical assistant who previously worked alongside her for about eight years.
The facility includes three exam rooms, including one that is wheelchair accessible, along with an accessible restroom. Higgs said the office also has a separate room planned for future aesthetic services such as Botox and fillers, though she emphasized family medicine will remain the primary focus.
Higgs also credited her husband for helping launch the business and supporting the operational side of the practice.
“I am a caregiver at heart, not necessarily a business person,” she said. “He’s been very involved in the business side of things, getting this up and going, and will continue to be so.”
She said the support she has received from the community during the opening process has been overwhelming.
“From my family and friends to the community in general, everyone has been super supportive,” Higgs said. “So I’m super thankful for that.”
Higgs Family Care is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patients are encouraged to call for appointments at 270-441-3311.
