The Memorial Day Run to Remember 5K will return to the Owensboro riverfront on May 25, offering community members an opportunity to honor military service members who died while serving their country.
The Run to Remember Memorial Day 5K — Run, Ruck, Walk welcomes runners, ruckers, and walkers of all ages and fitness levels. Participants may choose to run, carry weight in tribute during the ruck division, or walk alongside friends and family in remembrance of fallen heroes.
The event begins at 8 a.m. and will feature an out-and-back course starting and ending at the RiverPark Center. The route travels along Veterans Boulevard and First Street with a turnaround near English Park.
Packet pickup begins at 6:45 a.m., followed by pre-race ceremonies at 7:30 a.m.
The event is hosted by She’s the V.E.T., a nonprofit organization focused on supporting female veterans through advocacy, resources, and community connections.
The presenting sponsor is the Fraternal Order of Eagles Post 4168, with support from the ODCVA and Owensboro Health.
Organizers said the event is intended to provide a meaningful way for community members to remember those they have lost through military service while also promoting healing through exercise and community connection.
“We so often associate Memorial Day with cookouts, camping trips, and family get-togethers, forgetting that the Memorial Day holiday can be difficult for many,” said She’s the V.E.T. co-founder Melody Wallace. “For anyone who has lost a friend, a battle buddy, or a family member through military service, this day holds a space for both loss and remembrance. Exercise and community can both serve as methods of healing; it is our hope to provide an opportunity for both with the return of this event.”
Event activities will include a Memorial Day ceremony, a 5K run with age-group medals, a ruck division with commemorative patches, a one-mile Mayor’s Mile walking option, and a free kids’ fun run.
