List: Several Memorial Day events planned over coming week

Veterans organizations and community groups throughout Owensboro and Daviess County have announced several Memorial Day services and observances scheduled over the next seven days to honor fallen service members.

Events are scheduled as follows:

• May 19 — Volunteers will place American flags at the final resting places of veterans in Owensboro Memorial Gardens, 5050 KY 144, at 9 a.m.

• May 19 — Run for the Wall-Rolling Thunder at 6 p.m. at Shelton Memorial in Smothers Park, followed by Taps at VFW Post 696.

• May 21 — American Legion volunteers will place flags at Elmwood Cemetery, 1300 Old Hartford Road, beginning at 9 a.m.

• May 21 — The 39th Annual Police Memorial will be held at Abundant Life Church, 6601 U.S. 231 South in Utica.

• May 22 — Field of Poppies Ceremony at VFW Post 696, 311 West Veterans Boulevard, at 4 p.m.

• May 23 — Greenwood Cemetery Service on Leitchfield Road at 10:30 a.m.

• May 23 — Memorial Gardens Field of Honor Service on KY 144 at 2 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to support local veterans in need. All donations will go to a local food bank that serves veterans facing food insecurity.

• May 24 — American Legion Post 9 Memorial Service at the Elmwood Cemetery Triangle on Old Hartford Road at 1 p.m.

• May 24 — Utica Baptist Church Service and Flag Presentation Service at 415 KY 1207 at 5 p.m.

• May 25 — Memorial Day Run to Remember 5K: Run, Ruck, Walk at the Charles E. Shelton Memorial on the Owensboro riverfront at 8 a.m.

• May 25 — Memorial Day Service at the Sportscenter War Memorial hosted by the Owensboro Daviess County Veterans Organization at 11 a.m.

• May 25 — Sea Service at VFW Post 696 on the riverfront at 1 p.m.

• May 26 — American Legion volunteers will retrieve flags from Elmwood Cemetery beginning at 9 a.m.

The Sons of the American Revolution Service scheduled for May 21 at Mosley Square has been canceled for 2026.

Organizers encourage community members to attend the various events throughout Memorial Day weekend in remembrance of the men and women who died while serving in the United States military.
