After jumping out to a 7-0 season record, which included a 7-3 win over Rock Island to kick off last night’s doubleheader, the Owensboro Bombers fell to Lafayette Post 7-6 for their first loss of the season.

Against Rock Island, the Bombers jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead, behind a flurry of home runs by Colton Carver, Eli Hatfield, and Ryleigh Logan. Jumping in on the homerun derby, Jagger Pate launched a two-run shot in the fourth, before Rock Island added a run in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Porter Hay started on the mound, allowing three earned runs over 6 1/3 innings, striking out six, while Corbin Martin closed it out in relief.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bombers fell behind 5-2, but stormed back with four runs in the sixth. Brady Benjamin led off the inning with a walk and later scored on Jake Murphy’s two out single. A defensive error kept the inning alive, and Carver capitalized with a three-run homer to put the Bombers ahead.

Owensboro was unable to close it out, allowing two runs in the top of the sixth. Carver finished 1-3 with three RBIs, Murphy went 2-3 with an RBI, and Eli Hampton was 1-3 with an RBI. Gage Napier started on the mound, allowing three runs over 3 2/3 innings, while Logan and Gentry Atwell both pitched in relief.
