The Owensboro Human Relations Commission will host its second annual Dreamer’s Dash 5K Run/Walk this August, combining a community fitness event with a celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The timed run/walk is scheduled for August 23 at Smothers Park. Same-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with the race starting at 8 a.m.

The event honors the August 28, 1963, March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where King delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech before an estimated 250,000 people.

Organizers said proceeds from the race will support the Owensboro Human Relations Commission’s mission of advancing equality, inclusion, and belonging through advocacy, education, empowerment, and accountability.

Organizers have also added a poster contest this year to encourage greater community involvement and engage young people in honoring King’s legacy while promoting healthy living.

This year’s theme is based on one of King’s well-known quotes: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

Students interested in participating are asked to create a poster using the theme quote or another motivational quote from King. Posters will be displayed along the race route.

The contest will award first-, second-, and third-place prizes, with winners announced on race day. All participants will receive certificates of participation.

Poster submissions should be submitted on standard poster boards measuring either 18-by-24 inches or 24-by-36 inches. Submissions must include the student’s name, age, grade, school, address, telephone number, and email address. Entries are due by August 17 and should be delivered to the Owensboro Human Relations Commission office at 101 E. 4th Street.

Race registration costs range from $30 to $34.13, depending on registration options and selected race swag.
