Young artists will have the opportunity to explore the imaginative world of Surrealism during a free weeklong art camp at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art from July 6-10.
The camp, titled “Imaginative Surrealism,” is sponsored by RiverValley Behavioral Health and will introduce children to the Surrealist art movement through a series of hands-on projects designed to blend creativity, fantasy, and artistic expression.
Each day will feature a different project. The week begins with “Magical Menagerie” on July 6, where participants will build and sculpt their own fantastical creatures while learning about shape, color, texture, and three-dimensional design.
On July 7, guest artist Michael Chann will lead “Sketch to Stage,” a puppet-making workshop where campers will create two different types of puppets while also learning about storyboarding and character development.
The July 8 session, “Morphology Mashup,” will challenge students to transform everyday magazine images into dreamlike scenes using colored pencils and watercolor paints. The following day, campers will create mixed-media “Optical Oddities,” turning ordinary eye designs into imaginative three-dimensional artworks.
The camp concludes July 10 with “Chromatic Dreams,” a project inspired by the playful and unconventional qualities of avant-garde art. Participants will create colorful backgrounds and layered designs that produce surreal, dreamlike imagery.
Classes are open to children ages 6-15 and are offered in two-hour sessions from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. each day.
The museum said its spring, summer, and fall camp series is the only local art education program taught by professional artists and educators that is offered free of charge and open to any child.
Reservations are required and can be made by calling 270-685-3181 or emailing [email protected].
The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
