A dangerous heat wave will settle over the region this week, bringing several consecutive days of dangerously hot and humid conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS said a Heat Advisory is in effect through 8 p.m. Sunday, with heat index values expected to reach 102 to 107 degrees. An Excessive Heat Watch then takes effect from 11 a.m. Monday through 8 p.m. Thursday as heat index values climb to 105 to 110 degrees each afternoon, with Owensboro potentially reaching as high as 115 degrees during the week.

Daytime high temperatures are forecast to remain in the low to mid-90s, while overnight lows in the mid-70s will provide little relief. The National Weather Service warns that the prolonged stretch of extreme heat could continue into the Fourth of July weekend. Residents are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated, use air conditioning when possible, and check on older adults, young children, and others who may be vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
