Owensboro-based Freeman Athletic Fields has launched a new synthetic turf cleaning and maintenance program designed to help schools, parks, and athletic facilities extend the life of their artificial playing surfaces while improving safety for athletes.

Owner Matt Freeman said the company’s new Turf Guard 365 service provides deep cleaning, sanitizing, and performance testing for synthetic fields, addressing issues that develop as fields experience years of heavy use.

“Artificial turf is a major investment, and regular maintenance is critical to protecting that investment,” Freeman said. “Our goal is to help facilities provide a cleaner, safer, and higher-performing playing surface while extending the life of the field.”

Founded in Owensboro, Freeman Athletic Fields designs, constructs, and maintains both natural grass and synthetic athletic fields. The company serves municipalities, parks, schools, colleges, universities, professional teams, and amateur sports organizations throughout the region.

Freeman said synthetic fields accumulate dirt, debris, and organic matter deep within the turf system over time. The buildup can include broken turf fibers, leaves, and other contaminants, as well as biohazards such as blood, sweat, and skin cells.

According to Freeman, the Turf Guard 365 program deep cleans and disinfects artificial turf while restoring infill, improving drainage, and standing turf fibers upright to create a more consistent playing surface.

The maintenance process also includes G-Max impact testing before and after cleaning to measure a field’s ability to absorb impact and determine whether it meets industry safety standards for athlete safety, Freeman said.

The service uses friction sweeping, aeration and decompaction, high-efficiency vacuuming, power brushing and magnetic collection to remove debris, redistribute infill and improve overall field performance. A final disinfecting treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other harmful pathogens while reducing odors and helping protect athletes, Freeman said.

While Turf Guard 365 focuses on synthetic surfaces, Freeman said the company also installs, renovates, and maintains natural grass athletic fields, offering construction and ongoing maintenance services for both types of playing surfaces.

Freeman said routine maintenance not only improves playability but can significantly extend the lifespan of synthetic fields, preserving thousands of dollars in field value over time.
