Applications are now open for four $500 Larry “Chick” Owen Memorial Scholarships that will be awarded during this year’s Dust Bowl, continuing a tradition that honors the legacy of the longtime tournament supporter and community advocate.
The scholarships are made possible through a partnership between Owensboro Times, PeezO’s Pizza, the Dust Bowl organization, and Dust Bowl co-founder Gus Johnson. Named in memory of Larry “Chick” Owen, the scholarships recognize students who demonstrate community involvement and an appreciation for the Dust Bowl’s impact on Owensboro.
The scholarships are open to high school students in the Classes of 2026 and 2027. Recipients will be recognized during the Dust Bowl’s varsity boys’ championship later this month. Applications are available here and must be submitted by July 20.
Now in its 53rd year, the Dust Bowl remains a celebration of community and tradition — values Owen championed throughout his life until his death in October 2024.
The scholarship initiative began last year when Owensboro Times committed to sponsoring a scholarship as part of its Dust Bowl coverage. PeezO’s Pizza owner Byron Owen, Chick’s son, immediately matched the contribution; Johnson and The Dust Bowl organization followed suit.
“My dad loved the Dust Bowl and everything it stood for — bringing the community together, lifting people up, and giving back,” Byron Owen said. “This scholarship is a great way to honor him and to support young people who are trying to better themselves.”
For OT, the scholarships represent more than financial assistance. They are an opportunity to invest in local students while celebrating one of Owensboro’s most cherished summer traditions.
“The Dust Bowl has always been about more than basketball. It’s about pride, tradition, and the power of community,” said John Kirkpatrick, assistant editor of the Owensboro Times. “We’re proud to continue these scholarships for a second year and help recognize students who embody those same values while honoring Chick’s lasting legacy.”
Eligible students can apply by completing a short questionnaire that includes questions about their community involvement and their understanding of the Dust Bowl’s impact over the years.
Applications are available here and must be submitted by July 20. For questions, email [email protected].
