The Joe Ford Nature Center will give the community an opportunity to explore the world of moths and other nocturnal insects during a special Moth Night event later this month in celebration of National Moth Week.
The family-friendly program is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Joe Ford Nature Center. Activities will begin shortly after sunset and continue until approximately 10 p.m., depending on participation and viewing conditions. Admission is $5 for adults, while children may attend free.
The evening will feature insect expert Kevin Wiener, creator of the Facebook page “All Bugs Go to Kevin,” who will introduce participants to the diversity of moths and other nighttime insects found throughout Western Kentucky. Using specialized lights and observation sheets, guests will have the opportunity to observe dozens of moth species up close while learning about their life cycles, unique adaptations, and importance to local ecosystems.
While butterflies often receive more attention, organizers say moths serve as important nighttime pollinators and provide a critical food source for birds and bats, making them an essential part of Kentucky’s natural environment.
“Most people don’t realize how much activity begins after sunset,” Joe Ford Nature Center Executive Director Brooklyn Johnson said. “Moth Night is a chance to slow down, experience nature from a completely different perspective, and discover the incredible diversity of wildlife that comes alive after dark. We hope guests leave with a new appreciation for these remarkable insects and the important role they play in our environment.”
Attendees are asked to park at the Green River Area Development District office, where a Joe Ford Nature Center board member will direct visitors to the nature center. Parking at the nature center will be reserved for the event. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, insect repellent and a flashlight or headlamp. Complimentary popcorn will be available.
No registration is required. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be canceled. Additional information is available through the Joe Ford Nature Center’s Facebook page.
