Kentuckians have an opportunity to leave a message for future generations as part of a new statewide time capsule project commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.
The Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office is inviting residents to submit stories, photographs, artwork, personal reflections, and hopes for the future for possible inclusion in the Kentucky Time Capsule Project. Selected entries will be sealed inside a modified traditional Kentucky bourbon barrel time capsule that is scheduled to be opened in 2051.
“Housed in a modified traditional Kentucky bourbon barrel, the time capsule symbolizes both our rich heritage and our shared commitment to the future,” Secretary of State Michael Adams said. “We hope this project inspires Kentuckians to reflect on their role in democracy and civic life.”
The project is intended to capture what life in Kentucky looks like during this milestone in American history as the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary.
The bourbon barrel time capsule will travel across Kentucky throughout the year before being permanently housed at the Office of the Secretary of State. It will also contain the winning entries from the Secretary of State’s 2026 annual essay and slogan contests.
The time capsule’s first stop is at Somerset Community College during the Master Musicians Festival through July 19. It will also be on display at this year’s Kentucky State Fair before returning to Frankfort, where it will remain until it is opened in 2051.
