Families looking to add a furry friend to their home will have the chance to meet nearly 100 adoptable dogs and cats during Adoption Pawlooza this Saturday at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
Hosted by Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky, the event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at the Sportscenter, 1215 Hickman Avenue. Representatives from multiple animal shelters and rescue organizations across western Kentucky will bring pets of all ages, sizes, and breeds that are looking for forever homes.
Michelle Jones with Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky said the event was inspired by a successful adoption event in Louisville and was created to provide similar opportunities for shelters and rescues throughout western Kentucky.
“There was an event like this in Louisville with great success, and we wanted to offer the same opportunities for our shelter and rescue friends in western Kentucky,” Jones said. “We hope to have a successful event and for all the rescues and shelters to return home empty-handed.”
Jones said organizers expect approximately 90 to 110 animals to be available for adoption, including between 40 and 50 cats and 50 to 60 dogs.
Families attending the event will have the opportunity to interact with the animals, speak with shelter and rescue representatives, learn about volunteer opportunities, and visit local vendors. Food trucks will also be on site.
Adoption fees and requirements will vary by participating organization. Jones said prospective adopters should bring a photo ID and be prepared to pay adoption fees with cash or check, though some organizations may also accept credit or debit cards.
She added that at least one participating organization will offer reduced adoption fees through the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters program.
Jones said events like Adoption Pawlooza help bring attention to shelter animals that are often overlooked, particularly those in rural Kentucky.
“These animals, especially ones in rural Kentucky shelters, are so often overlooked,” she said. “Many of these shelters have few resources and are underfunded and understaffed, leaving these animals in shelters far too long.”
She said the event also showcases the collaboration among shelters and rescues working toward the same goal.
“We are all in this together to find our animals forever homes, to get them out of their dog kennels and cat condos and with their new families,” Jones said.
Organizers hope Adoption Pawlooza will become a recurring event in Owensboro.
