The Owensboro Human Relations Commission held a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration Saturday at the Owensboro Museum of Science & History. The HRC holds the event each year, but executive director Kaitlin Nonweiler said this was their biggest one to date.
Celebrating all Hispanic cultures, the HRC had free food samples, art and dance workshops, tables of authentic clothing, as well as children’s activities at Saturday’s event. Nonweiler said all were welcome to participate — either to learn more about Hispanic culture or to celebrate their own culture with others across the area.
The back area of the science museum was decorated with colorful streamers and balloons — the mammoth was wearing a sombrero, and several women were dressed in bright, floral Hispanic gowns.
“We have the most activities and programming we’ve ever had,” Nonweiler said. “The Human Relations Commission really wants to provide the community with opportunities to learn about the cultures that are here in our community.”
Giving the community a chance to taste Hispanic food, see different clothing and artifacts and participate in unique workshops pertaining to Hispanic culture was important to Nonweiler and the rest of the HRC.
“Those people are in our community, and we need to learn about their culture in order to develop relationships with each other,” she said.
